The iPhone 15 Pro won't be upgraded to an 8P lens, and the iPhone 15 Ultra is expected to have a periscope lens
Nov 02, 2022| The iPhone 15 Pro won't be upgraded to an 8P lens, and the iPhone 15 Ultra is expected to have a periscope lens
Ming-chi Kuo, a noted analyst at Skywind International, has written that he doesn't expect the iPhone 15 Pro to ship with an 8P lens, or rear-facing camera with eight plastic lenses, when it launches next year The "8P" here refers to the number of components in the lens, and the iPhone 15 Pro has one more optical component compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. Adding elements to a lens has pros and cons, but when manufacturers take an existing lens design and add elements, it's usually to reduce distortion, which is especially important in wide-angle lenses.
But he also believes that while the iPhone 15 Pro will not have this upgrade, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will see a big telephoto upgrade with a new periscopal lens. The periscopal telephoto lens will also be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which will be renamed iPhone 15 Ultra.
The telephoto lens on the iPhone 13 Pro model only offers 3X optical zoom and 15x digital zoom. For comparison's sake, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with a submersible lens that enables 10x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. Rumor has it that Apple may opt for 5x optical zoom.
Further details of Apple's implementation of the submariner lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 15 Ultra, aren't yet available. If true, it would be the first time a latent telephoto lens has appeared on the iPhone.
