iFixit's unpack confirms this: If you replace your own hard drive with another one, the Mac Studio will boot up with an error, unless you swap two Mac Studio hard drives with the same storage capacity for normal use.
It's fair to say that these slots are so Apple that MacBook users can relate to them.
Earlier MacBooks did support SSD replacement, but you either had to pay a lot of money to get an official Apple replacement or pick up an Apple-specified SSD that was compatible -- but not much cheaper. Fortunately, smart accessory makers have made Macbook-specific solid-state drive adapters, which can be bought for as little as 20 yuan in China, thus breaking away from Apple and using third-party M.2 hard drives.
Then Apple started to integrate hard drives into motherboards. This kills two birds with one stone, slimming the MacBook and preventing users from bypassing the restrictions by using a card to buy an unofficially specified SSD.
