Before Musk took over, Twitter wasn't in financial trouble, though it wasn't perfect. Vicki Bryan, founder of Bond Angle, a bond research firm: "I've been analyzing how a company gets into financial trouble and then gets out of it for more than 20 years, but I've never seen a new management destroy a company as quickly as Musk destroyed Twitter."

The question, then, is: How does Musk keep Twitter going? After years of watching Musk's approach to business, Bryan said, he might make an uncomfortable choice: "raid" Tesla.

But siphoning cash from Tesla, Musk's only profitable company should worry Tesla investors at a time when intense competition is upending its market dominance. Given Musk's obsession with Twitter, Tesla investors are asking: How far will Musk sacrifice Tesla in order to save Twitter?
