The role of thyristors

Function: The thyristor acts as a controllable conductive switch. Compared with the diode, the difference is the forward conduction control current control.

The main role of the thyristor in the circuit is to achieve controlled rectification. When a forward voltage is applied between the cathode and the anode of the thyristor and no signal is applied to the control electrode, the thyristor is turned off. If a positive small voltage is applied between the gate and the cathode, the thyristor will conduct, and the thyristor will remain on even if the control signal is removed, unless the anode supply loop is disconnected or the anode current is reduced to Less than the holding current of the thyristor. Normally, the current required to trigger a thyristor is equal to 1/100 to 1/1000 of the current flowing through the thyristor.

This means that when the thyristor is connected in series to the secondary winding of the arc welding transformer and the welding cable, it can not only convert the alternating current into direct current, but also control the welding current under the cooperation of the corresponding electronic device. The thyristor has only two operating states, namely conduction and cut-off. The current can only be adjusted by adjusting the conduction point (trigger angle) of the thyristor. In addition, the earlier the thyristor is turned on, the greater the power output to the load.
