SBD characteristics

The main advantages of SBD include two aspects:

1) as the height of Schottky barrier is lower than that of PN junction barrier, its forward conduction threshold voltage and forward voltage drop are lower than that of PN junction diode (about 0.2V lower).

2) because SBD is a kind of most carrier conductive device, there is no minority carrier lifetime and reverse recovery problem. The reverse recovery time of SBD is only the charge and discharge time of Schottky barrier capacitor, which is totally different from that of PN junction diode. Because the reverse recovery charge of SBD is very small, the switching speed is very fast, and the switching loss is also very small, especially suitable for high-frequency applications.

However, because the reverse barrier of SBD is thin and it is easy to breakdown on its surface, the reverse breakdown voltage is relatively low. Because SBD is more prone to thermal breakdown than PND, the reverse leakage current is larger than PND.
