Fast charging technology major update, USB PD3.1 release, support 48V and 240W output
Oct 06, 2022| Fast charging technology major update, USB PD3.1 release, support 48V and 240W output
Recently, USB PD3.0 fast charge standard has received the latest upgrade. The new USB PD3.1 fast charge standard will support the highest voltage output of 48V, and the charging power is synchronized to 240W
USB PD3.1 has been released

On May 25, the USB-IF Institute released USB Type-C Cable and Interface Standard V2.1, which updated the section on power supply capabilities. USB PD3.1 specification will be the original USB PD3.0 content into the Standard Power Range (SPR), the maximum Power to keep 100W unchanged; At the same time, the Extended Power Range (EPR) is Extended from 100W to 240W.
According to data released by the USB-IF Association, the Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS), or Adjustable Voltage Supply (28V, 36V and 48V), is new in the extended power range EPR.

The maximum current level remains unchanged at the maximum 5A; 100-140W power is 28V AVS, voltage range is 15V-28V; Greater than 140W to 180W power is 36V AVS, voltage range is 15V-36V; Greater than 180W to 240W is 48V AVS, and the voltage range is 15V-48V.
According to the USB PD3.1 standard, USB type-c cables are classified into 20V ordinary cables and 50V EPR cables. If the power output exceeds 100W, not only the 5A Cable of EPR (extended power) is required, but also the EPR-specific information handshake between the Source, Sink and Cable is required to enter the EPR from SPR. If the cable is a Captive cable attached to the charger, only a handshake is required between the Source and the Sink.
Since the voltage level is greatly increased, safety is very important. EPR requires higher safety standards for connectors and cables. Attention should be paid to IEC 62368's regulation on Limited Power Supply (LPS).
It is worth noting that in the formulation of USB PD3.1 specification, Huawei, Xiaomi, Lishun Precision, Huinengtai and many other domestic companies have actively participated in it and made important contributions to the new standard, which was written into the enterprise directory of standard drafting.

Usb-if, the full name of USB Implementer Forum, was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in the United States. It was co-initiated by Apple, HP, Intel Intel, Microsoft Microsoft, Renesas, ST stmicroelectronics, TI Texas Instruments and other companies.

Usb-if is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of Universal Serial Bus technology and the promotion of its application. By providing standard and unified transmission interface specifications, USB makes the connection and transmission between computers and peripheral devices easy and easy, eliminating the inconvenience of using external cards or switches. Generally, information products with USB specifications cover a wide range of products, such as computers, cameras, printers, keyboards, mice, screens, network devices, mobile phones and various new consumer electronic products.
