Apple's Q2 smartphone share hit a 10-year high, while the iPhone 13 continues to sell well around the world

According to the latest research report released by Strategy Analytics, Q2 global smartphone shipments declined by 7% year-on-year to 291 million units in 2022. Samsung tops the global smartphone market with a 22% share. Apple is in second place with 16% market share, the highest Q2 performance in the past decade. Xiaomi, OPPO (including OnePlus) and Vivo remain in the top five.

Woody Oh, director at Strategy Analytics, said: "Apple shipped 48 million iphones worldwide in Q2 2022, up 3 percent year-on-year and accounting for 16 percent of the global market share. This is the highest Q2 market share for Apple in the past decade, while leading Chinese brands have struggled in both domestic and overseas markets. "Apple had a good quarter, with sales of the iPhone 13 series continuing to grow in the US, China and other key markets."

Overall, sales in the quarter were down 7% year over year, with total smartphone sales in the second quarter of 2022 exceeding 291 million units, Strategy Analytics claimed. The company attributed the decline to the pandemic and the economy affecting discretionary purchases, and said the decline would continue.

Sui Qian, senior director at Strategy Analytics, said: "We forecast global smartphone shipments to contract by -7 percent to -8 percent year-on-year for the whole of 2022. "Geopolitical issues, economic downturn, price inflation, currency volatility, and disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to weigh on the smartphone market in the second half of 2022." She added that all these headwinds will continue into the first half of next year, and then things will ease in the second half of 2023, with Samsung and Apple continuing to outperform and remain in the top two positions.
