In May, the European Parliament will vote on a bill to make USB-C a unified port for electronic devices. All smartphones, including the iPhone, as well as tablets, cameras and game consoles, will have to use USB-C if they are sold in the EU.
Among Apple's main product lines, the iPhone is the most stubborn Lightning connector. Are they just one vote away from a universal interface?
In fact, Apple has been working on USB -- FireWire -- since before there was any USB. It performs much better than USB and has become the industry standard in parallel with USB.
Why did Apple create a standard that the industry eventually forgot?
