Unsuccessful Deletion Of Violence Content, Maximum Penalty Turnover Of 10%, Senior Management Sentenced To Three Years

The Australian Parliament passed a new law on Thursday. If social media does not “quickly” remove violent content on the platform, it can be punishable by a fine equivalent to 10% of its global annual turnover, and company executives will face up to three years in prison.

The new law was enacted after a shooting incident in two mosques in New Zealand on March 15, killing 50 people.

The law has placed Australia at the forefront of global action, and many countries are now monitoring platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, asking them to be accountable for content on their platforms.
