Turkish Tanker Rescued 108 Refugees But Was Arrested And Asked To Go To Europe
Mar 29, 2019| According to a report by the German News Agency on the 28th, a tanker flying the Turkish flag recently rescued 108 stowaways in the Mediterranean. Unexpectedly, the group of stowaways were held on the 27th and forced to turn north to Europe. At present, the Maltese military has taken control of the ship and even took the boat to the capital of Valletta.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Salvini, said the smugglers were "pirates" and said "the first time a refugee has hijacked a ship on the high seas."
The report said that the tanker was originally scheduled to travel to Tripoli, the capital of Libya. It had previously rescued 108 stowaways, including 19 women and 12 children, about 10 kilometers from the open sea. But some of them learned that they would be sent to Libya and took control of the tanker.
It is reported that according to the EU's current asylum regulations and regulations, refugees can apply for asylum to the country of entry on the basis of the Dublin Convention as long as they set foot on the land of their member states. But recently, the EU has stepped up its crackdown on the smuggling of the Mediterranean. Even if these refugees successfully arrive in Europe, their asylum applications are likely to be rejected.
