USB PD3.1 released to support 48V and 240W output of industry significance
Oct 06, 2022| USB PD3.1 released to support 48V and 240W output of industry significance
It is understood that the 28V, 36V and 48V voltages added in this specification correspond to the application of 6 batteries, 8 batteries and 10 batteries respectively. The USB PD fast charge standard expands many new application fields, including computer, server, motor drive and communication power supply.

Due to the limitations of terminals and cables, the usb-c transmission current is limited to 5A, and the USB PD3.0 voltage is 20V and 100W, which limits the high-power scenario. USB PD3.1 increases the load power to 240W by extending voltage to 48V and current 5A unchanged.
For computer applications, the current USB PD3.0 standard's maximum power of 100W is only enough to maintain the power supply demand of some light and thin laptops, and more powerful games still need to continue to use traditional large DC adapters.

USB PD3.1 standard can provide the maximum 240W charging power, which almost covers the power supply of all high-performance unique game books, mobile workstations and some desktops. At the same time, it will further enhance the popularity of USB PD fast charging standard in the field of consumer power supply, and replace the traditional bulky power adapter with advanced USB PD3.1 adapter.
The USB PD3.1 specification covers power supply for 24V bus motor drives, such as the power tool market. At present, power tools with built-in batteries are becoming more and more popular. Only in 2020, the shipment of power tools reached 490 million, and most power tools are powered by multi-string lithium battery packs. The release of USB PD3.1 standard will promote the iteration of power tools from traditional linear charging to USB PD fast charging, and simplify the charging circuit design. Reduce the overall cost and improve the fast charging experience.
In addition, USB PD3.1 standard can also be applied to security field POE power supply, two-wheeled electric vehicles, IOT devices and other fields to optimize equipment cost.
