Trump threatens to close the US-Mexico border Mexican avocado prices skyrocketed 34%

Apr 03, 2019|

According to US media reports, after US President Trump threatened to close the US-Mexico border, the price of Mexican Haas avocado rose 34% on Tuesday, the biggest increase in nearly 10 years, because Mexico is the largest supplier of avocado in the United States.

Fumasi said prices could soar as importers increased their purchases before any potential border issues. In addition, the heat wave in California last year delayed the harvest of local avocados, making the United States more dependent on Mexican supplies.

According to the Haas Avocado Association, Mexican avocados account for 75-80% of total avocado consumption in the United States, while California avocados account for only about 16%. Chile and Peru supply the majority of the remainder.

Avocado, once used primarily for making dipping sauces and salads, is now considered a superfood because of its nutritional properties.
