Three months after the iPhone 5S was released, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 410, its first 64-bit processor

Starting February 1, 2015, Apple's iOS will require new apps to support 64-bit. For apps that were already available, Apple gave them a June 1 deadline, giving them an extra four months to migrate.

Thanks to its closed system, Apple's transition to 64-bit iOS has been smooth, with the average user feeling little change, but developers need to do a little more work.

Just three months after the iPhone 5S was released, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 410, its first 64-bit processor. In 2014, Google released the first 64-bit version of Android, Android L, also known as Android 5.x.

At this point, though, iOS and Android were already 64-bit, they were still 32-bit compatible, which prevented 64-bit processors and apps from taking full advantage.

Apple was the first to take the knife to this problem. In 2017, with the A11 processor and iOS 11, Apple took the Machete and removed support for 32-bit apps, so 32-bit apps simply couldn't start.

On the Android side, due to the fragmentation of the system and the freedom of application distribution, we have been afraid to take the knife. It wasn't until 2021 that ARM finally announced that starting in 2023, the Arm architecture CPU cores would be mandatory 64-bit with no 32-bit compatibility mode.
