The new 14/16-inch MacBook Pro will have the same appearance, or an updated M2 Pro/M2 Max chip

Many users are looking forward to Apple's new 14/16-inch MacBook laptops, which are supposed to offer significant performance improvements powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. Usually the company does an annual update, but that's not expected this year. Mark Gurman says Apple doesn't plan to update 14/16-inch models until 2023

According to MacRumors, Apple refreshed the look of the M1 Pro/M1 Max machine in 2021, but the company typically keeps "a set of molds (design languages) for years." For the case, the MacBook is the same aluminum body, but with a flatter cut and less curved bottom. The C-side features an all-black keyboard with a large Force Touch trackpad and speaker grilles on either side.

On the screen, the current MacBook Pro is equipped with ProMotion/mini-LED technology, and the top and bottom bezels are just 3.5mm, but controversial "bangs" are slotted to accommodate the 1080p webcam. While no major design changes are expected, the MacBook Pro is rumored to have an update to the M2 Pro/M2 Max chip soon.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the M2 Max is available with up to 12-core cpus (up from the 10-core M1 Max) and up to 38-core Gpus (currently available with up to 32 cores). In addition, the M2 Max will support up to 64GB of unified memory, but more information on the M2 Pro chip, which is a step down, is not yet available.

Finally, there are rumors that Apple is considering introducing Face ID for Macs, with high-end MacBook Pro models expected to be the first to adopt it. Interestingly, Apple has been rumored to be developing OLED screens for future devices, including the MacBook Pro, as early as 2022. Display supply chain analyst Ross Young, however, doesn't think an OLED MacBook will arrive until 2024 at the earliest. Previous projections for 2023 still seem a little too optimistic.
