The word cell phone should be expanded to mean "a microcomputer that is held in the hand and played with." The key is how to handle the contact between the palm of the hand and the machine.
Like the iPhone 6, the injection molded antenna is teased on the outside, but you can feel the subtlety of the design whether you pull it out of your pocket, press the home button to unlock it, or swipe it across the screen.
This design language carried over to the iPhone 11, where Apple ditched the rounded bezels it had used for six years in favor of the iPhone 5's right-angled bezels.
Of course, this isn't without warning. Apple fired the first shot at right-angle bezels back in 2018 with the iPad Pro, and now it's just bringing that design language to the new iPhone.

The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini feels fine because of its small body and light weight, but on the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is 226g, it's a total disaster, and when you run around naked, it's like holding a brick.
The iPhone 13, of course, continues to use the same right-angle bezel, and it looks like at least three more generations of iphones will inherit the same design.
What did Apple officially say about the design change?

"The iPhone 12 Pro is a beautifully designed new product made from a selection of premium materials with exquisitely flat edges, a surgical grade stainless steel frame, a finely polished matte glass back and, for the first time, the introduction of an extremely durable metacadon crystal panel."
