The father of the iPod opposed Apple's monopoly: the EU was right to ask the iPhone to switch to USB-C
Oct 07, 2022| The father of the iPod opposed Apple's monopoly: the EU was right to ask the iPhone to switch to USB-C
Two days ago, the European Parliament passed a bill requiring all smart portable devices, such as phones and tablets, to use USB-C ports from the end of 2024.
That means Apple, which is still insisting on a dedicated Lightning port for the iPhone, will have to bow. In fact, it's already been rumored that Apple will switch ports starting with next year's iPhone 15.
Tony Fadell, a former vice president of Apple and the father of the iPod, shared his views on the issue on social media. Simply put, he believes that the EU is forcing Apple to do the right thing and that Apple is now a monopoly.
Fadell noted that while Apple doesn't like being told what to do by third parties, the fact that the EU is doing it for environmental reasons is a good context for Apple, which will be happy to accept it.
Fadell stressed that USB-C is the trend and a good choice for consumers.

Of course, some netizens have mentioned that Apple earns a lot of money from MFI certified accessories, and the replacement of USB-C will have an impact on this business. Tony Fadell, the founder of MFI, agrees.
The fact that the iPad 10 is expected to switch to USB-C when it launches in the middle to end of this month, thus completing the iPad camp switch, is already a strong sign. Switching to USB-C is also expected to increase data transfer rates and faster charging power.
