On October 4th the European Parliament overwhelmingly approved a bill to unify charging ports for portable smart devices. According to the bill, all new portable smart devices such as phones, tablets, digital cameras and portable navigation systems will be required to use USB-C charging ports from the end of 2024. From 2026, USB-C will also become a standard port for laptop chargers.
Alex SALIBA, MEMBER of the European Parliament: Today we use this one instead of a bunch of chargers. The simplest solutions are often the best and most practical, and such simple solutions will reduce thousands of tons of e-waste every year and promote the reuse of old electronics.
Eu competition chief Margrethe Vestager said the new rules were expected to save at least 200 million euros a year, or about 1.4 billion yuan, by reducing the mountain of outdated chargers. Reuters reported that Apple Inc. is expected to be among the most affected companies. The new rules will force it to ditch the Lightning port it currently uses in favor of the USB-C port already widely used by a number of competitors. However, the report noted that the new EU rules could also have a positive impact on Apple, possibly driving consumers to buy new Apple products that use USB-C ports.
According to the observation of charging head network, in addition to the European Union, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is also actively promoting the unification of charging interfaces and charging standards. CCTV has reported many times that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology promotes the unification of fast charging standards for mobile phones, which shows that the event has attracted widespread social attention and become a hot topic in People's Daily life.
