Mandatory in Europe! Apple will have to use USB-C on its new phones next year
Oct 07, 2022| Mandatory in Europe! Apple will have to use USB-C on its new phones next year
On October 5, the European Parliament approved a regulation requiring all new portable smart devices, such as phones and tablets, to use USB-C charging ports from 2024. This means that from autumn 2024, all iphones sold by Apple in Europe will come with USB-C ports.
The new rules would make the USB-C port typically found on Android devices a common standard across the 27-nation European Union, forcing Apple to change the built-in charging port on iphones and other devices. The new rules also require laptops to be uniformly USB-C from 2026, giving device makers more time to adapt.
The European Commission estimates that a common charging port could save consumers around 250 million euros ($247.3 million).
The first phone to use Lightning was the iPhone5 in 2012, exactly 10 years ago. At the time, the advantages of the forward and backward ports were great.
However, after years of development, Type-C interface is superior to Lightning interface in terms of charging and data transmission speed. The reason why Apple is reluctant to replace Lightning interface is more because of the huge profits generated by the patent of Lightning interface. In May, it was reported that Apple was working on an iPhone with a USB-C charging port that could be available next year.
