Google's older Pixel phones won't be updated to support face unlocking
Oct 12, 2022| Google's older Pixel phones won't be updated to support face unlocking
According to the Caschys blog, Google Germany has confirmed that the face unlock feature on the Pixel 7 line will not be available on older Pixel phones. Face unlock on Google's Pixel 7 series is a level 1 biometric feature that can only be used to unlock the phone, not to make payments; Apple's Face ID feature is different, using the original camera to create facial depth data that can be used to unlock the phone or make payments. In theory, this feature will work with older models with similar hardware, such as the Pixel 6 series, and has been available in beta systems. However, it seems that Google is not going to do this, which may be difficult for long-time users to accept.
