The organization of USB transfer protocol is USB-IF, whose members include Apple, Microsoft, HP, Intel and so on. From the first generation of USB 1.0 in 1996 to the current USB4, there have been many versions and many name changes in between.
1, USB 1.0
In 1996, the first generation of USB 1.0 was officially released, with a transmission speed of only 1.5Mbps. The biggest feature is support for hot swap, plug and play. Now USB 1.0 is history.
2, USB 2.0
In 2000, USB 2.0 was released, increasing the maximum transmission speed to 480Mbps. That was fast at the time, but today any portable hard drive is a T, a 2K 4K movie is a G, and USB 2.0 is no longer enough.
3, USB 3.0
In 2008, USB 3.0 was released, increasing the transfer speed to 5Gbps.
4, USB 3.1
In 2013, USB 3.1 was released with a transfer speed of 10Gbps. From here, USB-IF does its magic, renaming the previous interface standard, resulting in the current confusion of interface names.
The previous USB 3.0 was renamed USB 3.1 Gen 1, also known as first generation USB 3.1, and the newly released USB 3.1 was renamed USB 3.1 Gen 2, also known as second generation USB 3.1. The aforementioned USB 3.0 is dead in the water.
5, USB 3.2
In 2017, USB 3.2 was released with a top speed of 20Gbps. No mistake, the USB-IF organization has renamed the interface standard again.
The first generation USB 3.1 is renamed as USB 3.2 Gen 1, which is also called the first generation USB 3.2, and the second generation USB 3.1 is renamed as USB 3.2 Gen 2, which is also called the second generation USB 3.2. In this way, USB 3.1 also disappeared into history.
The newly released USB 3.2 (transfer speed 20Gbps) is called USB 3.2 Gen 2X2 also known as dual-channel USB 3.2 Generation 2
6, USB4
In 2019, USB4 was released in two versions, one in 20Gbps and one in 40Gbps. Physical ports Use USB Type-C ports.
That's the end of the USB protocol. To ensure device compatibility, all protocols are backward compatible.
