The European Parliament on Thursday approved a new rule requiring all new mobile phones, tablets and other portable smart devices to use USB Type-C charging ports from the end of 2024. That means Apple, which has insisted on a dedicated Lightning port for the iPhone, will have to bow. The European Parliament passed a bill to unify charging ports for portable smart devices by 602 votes to 13. All mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headsets, portable speakers, handheld video game consoles, e-readers, keyboards, mice and portable navigation systems will have a unified charging port within two years.
