Apple's iPhone 15 Pro series models to be launched in 2023 will be equipped with SONY's latest, state-of-the-art image sensor, leading to better image quality and higher dynamic range, Nikkei reported. Nikkei said it was good at taking detailed pictures of faces even in strong backlight.

SONY Semiconductor Solutions has developed new image sensors and will produce them at its Nagasaki plant to supply Apple and other smartphone makers, the sources said.

SONY's advanced sensor almost doubles the saturation signal level per pixel compared to current sensors, allowing it to capture more light and avoid over - or under-exposure in extreme situations, according to the report.

One advantage of this is that you can take better portraits when the background light is bright, such as on a sunny day. SONY is said to have achieved this with a new semiconductor architecture that aims to place photodiodes and transistors on different base layers, creating a higher density layer.
