Characteristics of varactor diode
1. The function of varactor diode is a semiconductor device made by the principle of variable capacitance between PN junctions, which is used as variable capacitor in high frequency tuning, communication and other circuits.
Varactor diode belongs to reverse bias diode. Changing the reverse bias voltage of PN junction can change the electric capacity of PN junction. The higher the reverse bias, the less the junction capacitance. The relationship between the reverse bias and the junction capacitance is nonlinear, as shown in the right figure.
2. Diagram of the relationship between the capacitance value and the reverse bias value of the varactor diode:
(a) the increase of reverse bias voltage results in the decrease of capacitance;
(b) decrease of reverse bias voltage, resulting in increase of capacitance.
The capacitance error range is a specified capacitance range of varactor diode. The data sheets will show the minimum, nominal and maximum values, which are often plotted.
