Apple wanted to release a plastic version of the iPad

According to whistleblower Mark Gurman, Apple's team has discussed bundling a plastic iPad with a low-cost plastic keyboard accessory and selling it separately for less than $500. The idea behind Apple's move, Gurman said, is to take on Chromebooks, take market share away from those devices and potentially make the iPad the new standard in the classroom. But the plastic iPad was never released.
