Starting with the iPhone 12, Apple has responded to fan requests with a 5.4-inch mini model, which is almost the same size as the iPhone 8 and perfect for one-handed use, though the Mini will be eliminated from the iPhone 14 lineup starting this year.
According to several reports, Apple's iPhone 14 line this year will scrap the Mini model in favor of a full-screen version, the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, which will only be available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch models.
In other words, starting this year, with the iPhone 14/14 Max and the iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max, smaller phones will be a thing of the past.
I don't think it's a surprise that Apple is killing off the Mini, because the gap between the iPhone 13 Mini and the iPhone 13 is only apparent once you've actually used it.
